もうもう【濛々】

●もうもうたる 〔霧などの〕 dense; thick; turbid; blinding 《sandstorm》; 〔朦朧(_もうろう)とした〕 dim

・もうもうたる霧 a thick [dense] fog; banks of thick mists

・もうもうたる砂塵 《raise》 clouds of dust; a haze of dust

・もうもうたる湯気 thick vapors; bursts of white steam

・もうもうたる煙 《be enveloped in》 volumes [billows] of smoke

・もうもうと in thick clouds; thickly; densely.

●部屋はたばこの煙でもうもうとしていた. The room was gray [thick] with tobacco smoke. | You could cut the air with a knife; the room was so full of cigarette smoke.
